Study casts doubt on 'healthy obesity'

Women who are overweight or obese but otherwise healthy are still at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, a large study suggests.
The analysis tracked the health of 90,257 women in the US for up to 30 years.
Those with excess weight were likelier to have a stroke or heart attack, even if they had normal blood pressure and cholesterol and no diabetes, it found.
Researchers said it showed "healthy obesity is not a harmless condition".
Obesity affects almost all of the cardiovascular disease risk factors, such as high blood pressure, excess cholesterol and diabetes.
But some obese people do not appear to have these metabolic disorders, leading scientists to debate whether or not the excess weight actually raises their risk.
This new study found women who were overweight or obese (BMIs in excess of 25 and 30 respectively) but had none of these risk factors were 20% and 39% more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than women of a normal weight (BMI 18.5-24.9) who were metabolically healthy.
However, the authors said it showed an association rather than cause and effect, and was mainly in white women, meaning the findings cannot be generalised to other ethnic groups or men.
"Our large cohort study confirms that metabolically healthy obesity is not a harmless condition, and even women who remain free of metabolic diseases for decades face an increased risk of cardiovascular events," said Prof Matthias Schulze, from the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbruecke, who led the study.
Women who were a normal weight but metabolically unhealthy were around two-and-a-half times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than women of the same weight who were metabolically healthy.
That risk was even greater in women who were overweight and obese, said the study, published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology journal.
Experts also found that the majority of metabolically healthy women developed either high blood pressure, excess cholesterol or diabetes as they got older, even if they were normal weight.

Fitness vs fatness

Prof Schulze added: "Our findings highlight the importance of preventing the development of metabolic diseases.
"They suggest that even individuals in good metabolic health may benefit from early behavioural management to improve their diet and increased physical activity in order to guard against progression to poor metabolic health."
Jeremy Pearson, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, added: "This large scale study confirms that obesity, even if unaccompanied by other warning signs, increases risk of cardiovascular disease in women."
However, Prof Carl Lavie, from the University of Queensland School of Medicine in New Orleans, who was not involved in the research, said he and colleagues had argued that "fitness is more important than fatness".
He noted that the study did not have precise data on the participants' physical activity and their cardio fitness.
He added: "It is prudent to remind ourselves that an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure."

Plane forced to make emergency landing after passenger's "unbearable" body odour makes others vomit and faint

A plane was reportedly forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger's "unbearable" body odour caused other passengers around him to vomit and faint.
UK Mirror reports that the Transavia flight to the Spanish holiday island of Gran Canaria was forced to make an unexpected detour when travellers became distressed by the stench of a man who "smelt like he hadn't washed in weeks".
The man smelt so bad other passengers started to faint and vomit after the flight took off from Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands.

Staff on board the Transavia service allegedly tried to quarantine him in a toilet of the Boeing 737 before the pilots were forced to divert the flight.
They reportedly landed in Faro in southern Portugal so the foul-smelling man could be removed from the flight.
The unidentified man was reportedly escorted off the plane by medical staff and placed on an airport bus.
A picture taken by one of the passengers shows medical personnel escorting the man from the aeroplane into a bus.

One of the passengers on board the plane, Piet van Haut, described the stench of the man as "unbearable".
He said: "It was like he hadn't washed himself for several weeks. Several passengers got sick and had to puke."
Transavia, an airline service company, reportedly confirmed the emergency landing saying it was due to "medical reasons".
It is, however, not known if the medical reasons related to the man or other passengers on the plane who were reportedly ill due to the stench.
A Transavia spokesman said: "The aeroplane diverted because of medical reasons, but it is indeed right that he smelled quite a bit."
In a related story one of the aircraft operated by one of Nigeria’s largest airline reportedly made an emergency landing many miles away from its destination on Tuesday, March 6, when the pilot detected smoke in the cabin.
The aircraft was travelling from Lagos to Accra, Ghana, when the discovery was made leading to an emergency landing.
The report quoted a passenger as earlier confirming the latest incident to rock the Nigerian aviation sector on social media on Thursday, March 8, with a complaint about alleged ill-treatment meted out to the affected passengers on the flight when the plane finally landed.

Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy voted out of office

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was voted out of office on Friday in a no-confidence motion, Reuters reported.
The leader of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) Pedro Sanchez will replace Rajoy.
The no-confidence motion was triggered by a long-run corruption trial, known as the Gurtel case, involving 29 people in Rajoy’s People's Party (PP).
The judges in the trial last week found the PP guilty of benefiting economically from the corrupt network and fined them 245,492 euros.
Sanchez is expected to be sworn in over the weekend and his cabinet appointed next week.

DPRK senior official heads to US for talks

CGTN
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has sent a senior official, Kim Yong Chol, to the US for working-level talks, Yonhap reported on Tuesday.
Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea Central Committee, was sent presumably for preparatory talks with the US side on a possible summit between US President Donald Trump and DPRK's top leader Kim Jong Un, which was initially scheduled on June 12 in Singapore.

Kim Yong Chol landed at Beijing airport on Tuesday and will journey on to New York the following day after talks with Chinese officials, according to Yonhap news agency, which cited diplomatic sources.
According to Chung Sung-yoon, an analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification, Kim Yong Chol would be the most senior DPRK official to step onto US soil since Vice Marshall Jo Myong Rok met President Bill Clinton in 2000.
Chung added that Kim Yong Chol has long been a right-hand man to DPRK's leader, playing a front-seat role during recent rounds of diplomacy aimed at ending the nuclear stalemate on the Korean Peninsula.
It was widely expected that Kim Yong Chol would travel to the US to reciprocate recent visits by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The two may meet to put final touches on the preparations for the Trump-Kim summit, Yonhap said.
It is believed that the visit of Kim Yong Chol indicates the advancement of preparations for the Trump-Kim summit, according to reports.

Meanwhile, a delegation from the DPRK arrived in Singapore on Monday for the summit. Kim Chang Son, a senior official of DPRK’s State Affairs Commission, is leading the delegation to discuss logistics and security issues.
On the same day, White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations Joe Hagin, who leads the US delegation, also arrived in the city state.
The two delegations are expected to meet as early as Tuesday.

Tuesday's talks are running in parallel with separate discussions at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom.
The delegations are led by US ambassador to Seoul Sung Kim, a former chief US nuclear envoy, and DPRK's Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui.
The two sides are reported to have been discussing denuclearization methods and timelines as well as ways to ensure DPRK's security, according to Yonhap.

Kenya prosecutor to charge 54 officials over alleged $80m graft scandal

Richard Ndubai, the director of the NYS, was arrested and 40 public officials and 14 private sector individuals were under investigation for their involvement in the missing funds, Kenya's Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Mohamed Haji said in a news conference.
The NYS is an organisation under the Government of Kenya, which was established in 1964 aiming to train young people in important national matters.
Monday's events mark the second corruption scandal to hit the NYS in the past three years.
With a surge in budget up to some 250 million US dollars per year, the NYS has been in troubles over Kenya's endemic corruption with the first scandal breaking out in 2015 after the alleged fraudulent payment of millions of dollars for goods and services, often to family and friends of powerful politicians.

"Investigations reveal that there was no procurement whatsoever,” Harji said to Reuters.
He also added that the alleged investigation would soon enter into the second phase and four special prosecutors set to be appointed to assist the case.
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta pledged to crack down corruption later on Monday. "We are not going to tolerate unethical people. People with responsibility must be ready to serve and not to be served," he said.
The probe is seen as a blow against President Kenyatta's commitment to stamp out corruption, which he made when first elected in 2013.
Earlier this year, a court acquitted almost two dozen of the agency's officials over an alleged theft of almost 475,000 US dollars in 2015.

One million French smokers quit in a year amid anti-smoking measures

Image captionTimes have changed since the smoky days of the 1970s, when music legend Serge Gainsbourg was seldom seen without a Gitanes

France has seen a sharp fall in the number of people smoking daily, with one million fewer lighting up from 2016-2017, a survey suggests.
Such a drop has not been seen in a decade, according to Public Health France, which carried out the study.
There has also been a decline in smoking among teenagers and those on low incomes.
The study pointed to the slew of anti-smoking measures introduced to France as a likely reason for the decline.
Recent years have seen neutral packaging, reimbursements for people using tobacco substitutes, higher cigarette pricing and campaigns like the national tobacco-free month.
According the survey, in 2017 26.9% of 18- to 75-year-olds smoked every day, compared with 29.4% a year earlier. This amounts to a drop from 13.2 million smokers to 12.2 million over the period.
France's Health Minister Agnès Buzyn in particular welcomed the decline in smoking among those on low incomes, saying that "tobacco is a trajectory of inequality, it weighs particularly on the most disadvantaged and it gets worse".

What's the global story?

A study last year found that despite decades of tobacco control policies, population growth had meant there was an increased number of smokers.
Worldwide, smoking causes one in 10 deaths, half of them in just four countries - China, India, the US and Russia, according to the Lancet.
A country-by-country analysis warns that "the smoking epidemic is being exported from the rich world to low-income and middle-income countries".
The World Health Organisation says picture warnings in particular are proven to help people quit, and says that 78 countries making up almost half the world's population currently meet best practices.

The second primary object of this administration is to fight corruption headlong. Like I have always said, if we don’t kill corruption, corruption will destroy the country. Three years into this Administration, Nigerians and the international community have begun to applaud our policies and determination to fight corruption. 5. National security
I want to commend members of the Multinational Joint Task Force drawn from Niger, Benin, Chad, Cameroon and our own country in collaboration with the International Community who are assisting in the fight against insurgency in the North East. I also commend the gallantry of members of our Armed Forces and other security agencies that have continued to provide security for lives and properties across the country. State and Local traditional authorities are helping with much needed intelligence in this fight against insurgency.
