‘Push APC into Atlantic Ocean,’ PDP governorship candidate tells Igbos

Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for Lagos State, Jimi Agbaje, has urged Igbos in the state to push the All Progressives Congress (APC) into the Atlantic Ocean with their votes.
Agbaje also urged the Igbos to ignore the threats being made by the APC calling them the final tricks of a drowning party.
The PDP candidate made the statements on Thursday, April 9, 2015 while addressing Igbo traders at the Alaba International Market.
“Nobody can push you into the Atlantic Ocean. Rather, you should use your votes to push the APC into the Atlantic Ocean by voting massively for the PDP on Saturday,” Agbaje said.
“Election is like a snake. You have to make sure you win by killing the snake completely by using your votes to drive the APC out of power. The reason why they are harassing you is because they fear Igbo votes. They will try to do ‘shakara’ for you but you must vote massively for the PDP and protect your votes,” he added.
“In the last 16 years, the APC has been full of arrogance. This arrogance must end once and for all. Saturday is the time to say enough is enough,” Agbaje added.
The PDP candidate made the comment in reference to recent anti-Igbo remarks attributed to the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu.
Oba Akiolu had told a group of Igbo leaders that they would die in the Lagoon if they didn’t vote for APC candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode.

China on Thursday, April 9, urged the U.S. not to take sides on territorial issues, voicing anger against U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter, who said 'Diaoyu Islands' fall under the scope of the Japan-U.S. security treaty.
"U.S.-Japan alliance arrangement originated from the Cold War. We strongly oppose using this arrangement to undermine the interests of third parties.
"The U.S. should be prudent in words and deeds, honoring its commitment to not taking sides on territorial issues.
“The U.S. should do more to contribute to regional peace and stability, rather than the opposite," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said.
Hua reiterated that ‘Diaoyu Island’ and its affiliated islands are part of China's inherent territory.
“It is a fact that can never be changed and China's determination to protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity cannot be shaken,” she said.
Hua called on the U.S. to respect China's efforts to resolve problems with other claimants through dialogue and negotiation.
She urged U.S. to stop words and actions that might complicate the situation, adding that U.S. should play a constructive role in regional peace and stability.

‘Buhari’s name won’t help Ajimobi,’ says Alao Akala

Former Oyo State governor and Labour Party governorship aspirant, Adebayo Alao-Akala
Former Oyo State Governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala, has said that the name of President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari wouldn’t help the re-election bid of the incumbent governor, Abiola Ajimobi.
Alao-Akala, who is also the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP), made the comment on Monday, April 6, 2015.
The former governor bared his mind via a statement released by his campaign spokesperson, Oludare Ogunlana.
The statement reads:
“Using Buhari’s name rather than his (Ajimobi) achievements is the greatest undoing a sinking governor can do to win at all cost. Buhari did not award contract at questionable amount or neglect meritocracy for mediocrity.”
“The APC administration is anti-masses as it has inflicted pains on the people as against its campaign promises in 2011.”
“Ajimobi is the most corrupt governor in the history of the state while Buhari is the only former head of state without a house in Abuja and the only former leader without an oil bloc. How then does Ajimobi think using Buhari’s name to campaign will guarantee him victory?”
Ajimobi is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of which Buhari is a member.

Turkey 'unblocks' Twitter, Facebook, Youtube remains blocked

Following the Turkish authorities decision to block Twitter after images of a prosecutor killed by leftist armed men last week was circulated on social media, the country has reversed the decision to block the micro-blogging site.
The move came after Twitter complied with requests on publication of the controversial images. Also unblocked was Facebook which had been blocked earlier for similar reasons, Youtube however remains blocked.
Marxist Revolutionary People's Liberation Party–Front (DHKP-C) had published pictures showing one of the gunmen who took Prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz captive, with his face concealed by a scarf and the group's red and yellow insignia, holding a gun to the hostage's head at his offices in Istanbul.
The images which were circulated on social media while the siege was going on was published by several Turkish newspapers as well as news websites, seriously irking the Turkish government who then launched a probe into the 4 newspapers for disseminating what they termed "terrorist propaganda".
Al Jazeera reports that prosecutors also filed a similar complaint it did for Twitter, Facebook and Youtube for Google that led to a court decision demanding the company removes similar content in 4 hours. Unless Google removes the content in the period mentioned, it is likely to be blocked in the first hours of Tuesday.
According to the secretary general of Internet Service Providers Union (ESB), Bulent Kent, Twitter confirmed through its lawyers in Turkey that all the requested content had been removed from the website and it is now accessible.
This won't be the first time Turkey would block social media channels as it made a similar move in March 2014 during the the run-up to local elections.
The Turkish government at the time blocked Twitter and Youtube after audio recordings purportedly showing corruption in the inner circle of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was prime minister at the time, were leaked to the internet.

In US Drug-resistant dysentery on the rise

Reports have emerged that a drug-resistant form of dysentery has appeared on the scene in  the United States.
The appearance of the drug-resistant form of dysentery known as Shigellosis has prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to recommend that doctors stop providing antibiotics to treat mild forms of the illness.
In a report released by the CDC, 243 people across 32 US states and Puerto Rico have presented with a drug-resistant form of Shigellosis, sometimes known as bacillary dysentery.
The illness is reportedly caused by the bacteria Shigella and can bring about symptoms ranging from mild abdominal discomfort to fever and diarrhea with blood, pus, or mucus in the stool. It usually takes a week to recover from, but can be incredibly painful.
According to Gizmodo, Shigellosis is increasingly brought into the country by international travelers, many of whom take the antibitotic ciprofloxacin to stem its effect.
The CDC doesn’t know exactly why this new strain of drug-resistant Shigella has appeared, but it could be due to sufferers not finishing a full course of antibiotics thereby exposing the bacteria to low doses which encourage resistance without killing them.
The group however fears that the scourge could spread especially “if introduced to populations of homeless persons, MSM, or children in child care settings"
The body went on to cite the example of the homeless population in San Francisco where a large, protracted outbreak has occured. Other affected areas which have been identified include Massachusetts, California, and Pennsylvania.
Recommended tips by the CDC for curbing the spread of the illness include having international travelers consume hot foods and fluids directly from sealed containers. Doctors have also been advised to prescribe ciprofloxacin less often when treating mild cases of Shigellosis while people are also encouraged to wash their hands thoroughly with hot soap and water.

‘Oba Akiolu is the father of all,’ Chief explains what monarch told Igbos

Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu
The Opeluwa of Lagos, Chief Aderibigbe Ajose has attempted to clarify the statement made concerning the Igbos in the state by the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu.
Oba Akiolu became the centre of controversy after he said that any Igbo person who doesn’t vote for All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode would die in the Lagoon.
Chief Ajose however said, in a statement released on Monday, April 6, that the Oba had only referred to the Lagoon as part of the tradition of Lagos.
The statement reads:
“Last Sunday, all honorary Eze Ndigbos in Lagos paid a courtesy call to HRM Oba Akiolu. At the meeting the visitors praised the Oba for his fatherly support for and cooperation with Igbos in. Lagos. They assured him of their continued good neighborliness with other tribes in Lagos and support everything that’ll further strengthen that harmony.”
“Oba Akiolu, on his part, acknowledged the enviable performance of Governor (Babatunde) Fashola and his contribution to the growth of investments in Lagos.”
“He gave the assurance that he is not disturbed or angry with South-East and South- South votes for President Jonathan as perceived by the Eze Ndigbos. The Obas thereafter called on the Igbos chiefs to show appreciation to Lagos State by supporting his candidate Mr. Ambode for continuity of excellence as they have earlier promised.”
“He assured them of his continued support‎ and assistance where needed and the meeting ended with the traditional breaking of kolas, alligator pepper, and bitter kola and pouring of liberation on the ground.”
“It was within this context that that the tradition of Lagos, with regard to the lagoon, came up. It was noted that whoever works against the throne and the interest and peaceful co-existence of Lagos would end up in the lagoon as per tradition.”
“Oba Akiolu stated further that the Igbo people have not betrayed the throne. Lagos has also not betrayed the Igbo people. Lagos has done so much to make the Igbos comfortable and to prosper. For this, we expect reciprocal respect and understanding.”
“The Oba of Lagos prays that the Lagoon and the throne will continue to bless and protect all those who reside and visit Lagos. Oba Akiolu is the father of all irrespective of tribe, religion or political persuasion.”
The Oba's comments have attracted strong criticism with the PDP accusing him of playing God in the affairs of Lagos State.
