"HIV/AIDS" Popular Herpes drug could help control killer disease

New research published in the journal, Clinical Infectious Diseases, has shown that a herpes drug can be used to control HIV/AIDS.
The researchers said their findings challenge the belief that popular herpes drug Valtrex (valacyclovir) requires the presence of herpes to benefit people with HIV-1, the virus that causes AIDS.
The study included 18 HIV patients in Peru and showed that when patients took Valtrex twice daily for 2 weeks, they had decreases in HIV-1 levels.
Experts suggested that Valtrex worked against HIV by reducing inflammation caused by the herpes virus.
This would give the HIV virus fewer active immune cells to attack, reducing the spread of the virus.
Study co-senior author, Dr. Michael Lederman, who is a professor of medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland said  the drug doesn’t depend on reducing inflammation to work against HIV.
This means that Valtrex can be used in a broader range of people with HIV-1, and also suggests promising new directions for creating new HIV drugs, especially because some forms of HIV-1 have become resistant to existing drugs.
In addition, Ledermen said Valtrex could augment the cocktail of medications HIV patients take for reducing HIV replication.

Coffee Prevents Heart Attacks, Study Says

coffeeDrinking up to five cups of coffee a day could help prevent heart disease, new research has found.
A team of experts studied a group of more than 25,000 Korean men and women with an average age of 41.
They had no previous signs of heart disease.
Their coffee consumption was listed as none, less than one cup a day, one to three cups a day, three to five cups a day and five or more every day.
The researchers discovered those who drank between three and five cups were less likely to show signs of heart disease.
Kangbuk Samsung Hospital in Seoul, South Korea, led the research.
The authors concluded: "Our study adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that coffee consumption might be inversely associated with CVD (cardiovascular disease) risk.
"Further research is warranted to confirm our findings and establish the biological basis of coffee's potential preventive effects on coronary artery disease."
Victoria Taylor, senior dietician at the British Heart Foundation, said: "While this study does highlight a potential link between coffee consumption and lower risk of developing clogged arteries, more research is needed to confirm these findings and understand what the reason is for the association."
The researchers were looking for the presence of coronary artery calcium - an early indicator in heart disease.
People who drank a few cups of coffee each day were less likely to have visible calcium deposits in their arteries.

Obanikoro Is Minister Of State For Foreign Affairs

Obanikoro
President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday swore in former minister of state for defense, Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro as the minister of state for foreign affairs II. Obanikoro, it would be recalled faced stiff opposition to his ministerial nomination and eventual clearance by senators of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) who challenged his nomination following his ‘alleged’ involvement in the use of military personnel to rig the Ekiti state elections. PDP calls for Muhammadu Buhari arrest over ‘illegal radio station’

APC Presidential Candidate, Muhammadu Buhari
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the arrest of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.
The PDP made the demand after accusing Buhari and his top associates of running an illegal radio station called “Radio Chanji” or “Radio for Change.”
This was revealed on Wednesday, March 18, by the spokesperson of the PDP campaign organization, Femi Fani-Kayode in a statement.
The statement reads:
“Our attention has been drawn to the existence of an illegal radio station called APC RADIO or RADIO CHANJI. This radio station has been broadcasting falsehood, propaganda and inciting comments, periodically over the last few days and since inception.”
“We seize this opportunity to call on the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, NBC, to set its house in order while ensuring that its rules are followed. We call on them to use all means available to stop this illegal radio station from operating and if necessary to block its illegal transmissions.”
“The person that is heading this operation is Ambassador Yusuf Mamman, an APC leader and stalwart, who has much experience in the world of special operations and disinformation and who has been given millions of dollars to start this illegal radio station. The objective of the radio station is to serve as a propaganda tool to fight the government after they lose the elections on March 28.”
“The brain behind the operation is the former governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, who equally founded Radio Kudirat during the days of NADECO, when the government of late General Sani Abacha was being fought by a number of people in Nigeria. The opposition know that they would lose the election and after this happens, it is their intention to begin to use this illegal radio station to incite Nigerians against the government.”
“They intend to use the radio station to incite the armed forces to mutiny. They intend to create a major division and utter chaos within the Nigerian state, using religion and ethnicity, and they will take that opportunity to either call for full blown military intervention or the establishment of an Interim National Government. “It is through the auspices of this illegal radio station that they intend to announce members of their planned shadow and parallel government.”
“The truth of the matter is that this will not work. However it is important for the security agencies to arrest Yusuf Mamman and question Kayode Fayemi, Bola Tinubu, Rotimi Amaechi and the APC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) himself on the operation, illicit and dangerous agenda of this illegal radio station.
“We will not sit back and watch them achieve their objectives. We will not allow them to destabilize Nigeria and we will not allow them to create a parallel government after they lose the elections.”
Fani-Kayode also accused the APC of plotting to release a scandalous documentary against President Goodluck Jonathan three days to the March 28 elections.

Health Fact!! Long-term breastfeeding could yield a higher IQ

Breastfeeding could have a direct impact on intelligence and a high IQ, a long-term study suggests.
According to the BBC, the research in Brazil traced nearly 3,500 babies, from all walks of life, and found those who had been breastfed for longer went on to score higher on IQ tests as adults.
Experts say the results, which was published in The Lancet Global Health, while not conclusive, appear to back current advice that babies should be exclusively breastfed for six months.
The findings however stressed that there are many different factors other than breastfeeding that could have an impact on intelligence.
Dr Bernardo Lessa Horta, from the Federal University of Pelotas, Brazil, said his study offers a unique insight because in the population he studied, breastfeeding was evenly distributed across social class.
Most of the babies, irrespective of social class, were breastfed - some for less than a month and others for more than a year, with those who were breastfed for longer scoring higher on measures of intelligence as adults.
They were also more likely to earn a higher wage and to have completed more schooling.
Dr Horta believes breast milk may offer an advantage because it is a good source of long-chain saturated fatty acids which are essential for brain development.
But experts say the study findings cannot confirm this and that much more research is needed to explore any possible link between breastfeeding and intelligence.
Kevin Fenton, national director of health and wellbeing, Public Health England, said there was strong evidence that breastfeeding provides some health benefits for babies such as reduced respiratory and gastrointestinal infections in infancy.
He therefore advised exclusive breastfeeding for around the first 6 months of life.
While Dr Colin Michie, chairman of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health's nutrition committee, said what made this particular study powerful was the fact that looks at a number of other factors including education achievement and income at age 30 which, along with the high sample size.

No More Polls Shift, INEC Assures Nigerians

Jega
The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega has assured Nigerians that there will not be any further postponement of the rescheduled general election. Jega gave the assurance on Wednesday, at an interactive session with the Civil Society Situation Room, a coalition of over 60 civil society organisations, in Abuja. The INEC Chairman stated that the Commission was fully prepared for the exercise while he disclosed that 11 states have, so far, achieved over 90 per cent Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collection, because INEC maximised the six-week extension of the polls. “We are now, adequately, prepared for the elections, which have been rescheduled to March 28 and April 11. And I want to say that I’ve not seen any indication from anywhere that there is a desire for another postponement of this election. So, we are all focused on March 28 and April 11. “Soon after we announced the rescheduling of the elections, the Commission met and decided on how best to utilise this period of extension for six weeks. We decided that the first thing to do was to do a field assessment”, he said.

Stephen Keshi to sign new Super Eagles deal this week

Stephen Keshi is expected to sign a new contract this week which will reinstate him as the coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
The coach and the Nigeria Football Federation have been back and forth in contract negotiations.
But after meeting last Wednesday, March 11, a top official at the Glass House has revealed to Pulse that the Delta State born former Nigerian international will be signing a new deal this week.
The source which was at the meeting revealed that an agreement was reached after deliberations.
Though talks are still ongoing, the source expressed optimism that Keshi will sign a new deal in the coming days and a formal announcement to follow before the end of the week.

‘No going back on card readers,’ INEC Chairman says

INEC Chairman, Attahiru JegaThe Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, has said that the commission would proceed with plans to use card readers in the conduct of the upcoming general elections despite widespread resistance.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other groups have called for the card readers to be shelved saying that a malfunction of the machine could lead to mass disenfranchisement.
Jega also stated that he has no plans of resigning from his position because he still has a job to do.
The INEC Chairman made the comments on Monday, March 16, during a town hall meeting in Abuja.
“If we don’t use card readers, we will lose respect and credibility. We will be going back to old ways when alteration of results were possible,” Jega said.
Jega also said that despite the newness of the card reader technology, INEC had conducted a quality assurance test which certified that the card readers would work.
He also described opposition to the use of the card readers as  “diversionary” and an to “move us backward.”
On rumours of his resignation and being forced to proceed on terminal leave, Jega said:
“I am not under any pressure to resign. The issue of terminal leave is voluntary. Why will I resign when I have a constitutional duty? Until, April 11, I have a duty. I think it is a disservice for anybody to resign at a stage there is serious assignment like the one I am doing.”
“No sensible person, in my view, will contemplate leaving when there is a duty. I read about the pressure on me to resign or that anybody want to sack me on newspapers like everybody. Nobody has told me to proceed on terminal leave,” he added.
Numerous reports have it that Jega has fallen out with the Presidency and as such would be forced to resign or proceed on terminal leave to make way for a replacement.
