Supreme Court fixes March 12 for judgment in ex-Gov Dariye’s appeal

The Supreme Court has scheduled judgment for March 12 next year in the appeal by former Plateau State Governor, Senator Joshua Dariye.

The senator representing Plateau central in the Senate

The court chose the date on Thursday after taking final arguments from lawyers representing parties.

Dariye is, by his appeal, praying the Supreme Court to upturn the November 16, 20218 judgment of the Court of Appeal, Abuja, which convicted him and sentenced him to 10 years for diverting public funds estimated at N1.162billion while he was the governor.

A three-man panel of the Court of Appeal, led by Justice Stephen Adah, in its decision, upheld an earlier judgement by Justice Adebukola Banjoko of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), delivered on June 12, 2018.

Dariye who was the governor of Plateau state between 1999 and 2007 was in June 2018 sentenced to 14 years in prison by an Abuja High Court for stealing state funds while in office.

He was found guilty of diverting N1.7 billion state ecological funds. However, the Court of Appeal in Abuja reduced the senator's jail term to 10 years

Sayomi who hailed from Igosun in Oyun local government area of the state served as a deputy governor under the administration of Mohammed Lawal between 1999 and 2003.

The former deputy governor's death was confirmed in Ilorin, the state's capital by his son, Ola Sayomi.

“He died on Wednesday night between 9:30 p.m. and 10:p.m. He was born on Oct. 10, 1925. We will miss him because he was a hero to us in everything."

Meanwhile, the crisis rocking the Kwara state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday, December 10, took another twist as two of President Muhammadu Buhari kicked against the move by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to control the party.

The minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed, the minister of state for transportation, Gbemisola Saraki and other stakeholders in APC berated the governor for his efforts to stop Bashir Bolarinwa from being recognised as the chairman of the state caretaker committee.

Our source gathered that the stakeholders, however, described Governor AbdulRazaq's actions as illegal, illogical and unacceptable.

A chieftain of the party in the state, Akogun Iyiola Oyedepo, who addressed the press conference in Ilorin, expressed concern that the governor had not invited Bolarinwa for the swearing-in ceremony that would take place in Abuja.

“The information at our disposal is that Governor AbdulRazaq has gone to the national headquarters of the party to urge the national caretaker committee to exempt Bolarinwa from the swearing-in ceremony on the ground that Kwara executive of 2018 was not a product of a congress."

Chaudhuri said the approval of the loan, which was requested in the wake of the devastating impact of the coronavirus pandemic, was delayed to allow Nigeria to carry out currency reform including the unification and flexibility of the exchange rate, removal of fuel subsidy, among others.

He stated:

“This country partnership framework will guide our engagement for the next five years in supporting the government of Nigeria’s strategic priorities by taking a phased and adaptive approach.
“To realize its long-term potential, the country has to make tangible progress on key challenges and pursue some bold reforms. Our engagement will focus on supporting Nigeria’s efforts to reduce poverty and promote sustained private sector-led growth.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has stated that about 68% of households in Nigeria wallowing in poverty have resulted in taking loans just to buy foods.

NBS made this known in its August 2020 survey amid hard-biting food insecurity that has made the price of basic necessities soar up beyond the average affordable price.

According to the body, which made this known after a survey, the affected households were reported to have been borrowing from friends and family members.

NBS said 9% of the households obtained loans from banks and microfinance institutions, adding that this is due to the deteriorating economy which was compounded by the current highly-ravaging Covid-19 crisis.

Physician: Wet dreams not a disease or spiritual attack

A medical expert, Dr Chinonso Egemba, says that ‘Wet Dreams’, experienced in adolescents or in adulthood usually while asleep, is not a disease or “Spiritual attack”.

A medical expert, Dr Chinonso Egemba, says that ‘Wet Dreams’, experienced in adolescents or in adulthood usually while asleep, is not a disease or “Spiritual attack”.

Egemba, who is popularly known as ‘Aproko Doctor’, stated on Sunday in Awka, that there is the need to correct such perceptions to reduce the anxiety associated with having wet dreams.

He described wet dreams as nocturnal emission which occurs mostly in adolescents or in adults usually while sleeping because of a dream which may or may not be sexual in nature.

According to him, women can also have wet dreams, but men are more prone to having it and it may or not result in a discharge as it does in men.

“You do not have to be sleeping with a “spirit husband or spirit wife” according to some religious beliefs in this part of the world.

“Wet dreams are common during puberty and adolescence, this can be as a result of hormonal changes that occur during this time.

“As a person gets older, the hormone levels become more stable hence the frequency of wet dreams tend to drop as one gets older.

“We need to understand that wet dreams is a normal part of life. This will help you reduce the anxiety associated with having wet dreams,” he said.

Egemba said there was no proven cause of wet dreams.

“You can have a wet dream without dreaming about sexual activity and sometimes become aroused sexually due to stimulation from friction with the beddings.

“Some studies say that lying on your stomach can spark wet dreams. This has not been proven too,” he said.

The Physician also said that wet dreams is a normal event in life and not symptoms of sickness or a sexually transmitted disease.

According to him, not everyone will have wet dreams, some people never experience it throughout their lives and they are perfectly normal.

“Speaking to a psychologist might help. Nocturnal emissions are purely normal and do not imply that something is wrong with you.

“Understanding this helps you live with it. You might experience some embarrassment, other than that, it is perfectly normal.

“Live your normal life, nothing is wrong with you. You are not possessed by a demon or married in another realm,” he said. Source: NAN.

Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury are set to pocket £100million each when they fight in 2021 and the bulk of the deal is expected to be concluded in a few days.

"The only problem that needs to be resolved is the TV rights issues and after that, we are all in for the fight
"Everyone is completely in on the finances — 50-50 first fight, 60-40 to the winner, two fights.
"There is no reason we cannot complete the deal in a couple of days and then move on and solve the other problems."

Joshua recently knocked out IBF mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev in the ninth round of their fight to retain his IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO titles.

The first fight with Fury will be in the Middle East and the rematch will made available for fans in the United Kingdom.

What could pose as a hindrance to the fight is the legal dispute between Fury's rematch with Deontay Wilder which they believe is now invalid.

On the other hand, the broadcasting rights could also be a problem as Joshua is signed to Sky and DAZN, while Fury is with BT and ESPN.

Meanwhile, the WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has vowed to knock his countryman Anthony Joshua out in the third round.

The 32-year-old made the comments in a short clip posted on his official Twitter page after watching his fellow Briton beat Bulgarian opposition Kubrat Pulev at the O2 Arena.

This Joshua's second straight win after reclaiming his IBF, WBA, and WBO titles from Andy Ruiz Jr about a year ago in Saudi Arabia.

Anthony Joshua successfully defends titles in grand style, Tyson Fury sends 1 big message as President Buhari hailed the champion

Anthony Joshua has successfully defended his WBA, WBO and IBF titles after defeating Kubrat Pulev by TKO in the 9th Round on Saturday night, December 12.

The 31-year-old Briton last fought in Saudi Arabia when he won his titles back from Andy Ruiz Jr. in December 2019.

On the night against Pulev, not much was seen in the first round as Anthony Joshua stood-off his challenger, wondering why he isn't all-guns blazing like he was in 2014 vs Klitschko.

In Pound 2, Pulev's gloves pulled off to the laughs of the Bulgarian as Joshua was the first to really unload to a huge roar from the crowd.

There was nothing so spectacular in Round 4, but AJ landed a big right late in the 5th round, but he couldn't follow up this time as he did in the third. In Round 3, a massive right and then shot after shot after Joshua exploded but Pulev managed to walk away from AJ and was given a count by the official. AJ then scores another knockdown!

The 6th Round saw the Bulgarian show some glimpses as he produced more frequency, knowing he needed to be pro-active. Joshua, nonetheless, evaded most of his efforts and has a smile on his face as he initiates counter-jab mode.

In Round 7, AJ re-introduces the straight right/left hook combo a couple of times, combining it with uppercuts, but Pulev did well to soak up the pressure.

AJ put up more aggressive show in Round 8 and it eventually paid off in the following round dropping Pulev for a third time in the fight. And then a fourth; with seconds left in round nine, the official counts Pulev down! Joshua wins by TKO.

WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has vowed to knock his countryman Anthony Joshua out in the third round.

The 32-year-old made the comments in a short clip posted on his official Twitter page after watching his fellow Briton beat Bulgarian opposition Kubrat Pulev at the O2 Arena.
