The altercation erupted on Monday night, March 4, and lasted till Tuesday morning, March 5.

It was said to have led to the destruction of houses and loss of lives. The clash involved residents from Ibeshe Riverside and Ibeshe Seaside.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos police spokesperson, confirmed that police actively addressing the situation.

"We have sought assistance from the Navy, and they are collaborating with us to quell the violence." He added .

Our source observed that unlike communities in Nigeria's northcentral region, communal clashes are not common in Lagos state. However, there are notable cult cases, which often lead to fatal violence

Lagos is one of the states in Nigeria with a strong security system. Despite that, the state is not resting on its oars.

In December 2023, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu unveiled a plan to bolster security infrastructure with the announcement to raise N7 billion in support of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF).

The following month, a prominent billionaire, Femi Otedola, donated N1 billion to the Fund.

In a related story, there was tension in Lagos as some cult groups said to be students of Community Senior Grammar School and Ikotun High School in the Alimosho local government area of Lagos state clashed.

Some policemen nearby intervened to restore calm as the groups from the two schools fought, but it worsened the situation as the cult boys reacted angrily to the officers' move.

Abuja Residents Criticise Motorcycle Crushing

You are currently viewing Abuja residents criticise motorcycle crushing, suggest auctioning, fines

Some Abuja residents have kicked against the incessant crushing of motorcycles impounded by the Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) and security forces.

The authorities have consistently crushed motorcycles seized from traffic offenders, especially those caught in areas the bikes are banned.

Records from the FCTA show that hundreds of thousands of motorcycles have been destroyed in the last two years alone.

The residents, while reacting to the recent round of destruction in Abuja noted that the destruction should be replaced with stiffer fines or the auctioning of the motorcycles for use in areas they are not banned.

Some opined that the heavy fines would discourage riders from veering into areas where their presence was outlawed, associated with the perpetuation of insecurity involving motorcyclists.

“It will be recalled that many of the crimes committed in Abuja are mostly carried out on bikes; in which something must be done to prevent such crimes from happening again ".

Meanwhile, Dr Abdulateef Bello, the Director of the Department of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), has said that plans are underway to crush more than 130 impounded vehicles that failed integrity tests.

He revealed that the vehicles would undergo standard verification with those below minimum standards crushed, while the owners could face mobile courts and penalties in accordance with the law qtrevenue for the FCT.

Responding to allegations, Emetu encouraged the public to report any misconduct by DRTS personnel, assuring that such cases would be thoroughly investigated.

He reiterated the importance of public collaboratiod ln nsj lol, emphasising that motoriysts are key stakeholders and treated with respect.

Responding to suggestions that fines be increased instead of crushing impounded vehicles, Emetu emphasised that fines were already being implemented within the legal framework.

He pointed out that the effectiveness of fines had been limited, with many traffic violators failing to comply.

The spokesperson emphasised the commitment of DRTS to its primary goal of ensuring safety on the roads and urged the public to engage constructively with the agency to address concerns.

On allegations of corruption and misconduct of its personnel, Emetu acknowledged that enforcement entities often face public skepticism.

He encouraged the public to report concerns about staff behavior instead of confronting them, highlighting the readiness of the office to address public inquiries through its SERVICOM channel. (NAN).

San Francisco self-driving car involved in serious accident

A self-driving car operated by US company Cruise ran over a woman after she was first knocked in front of it by a hit-and-run driver in San Francisco late Monday, video showed.

The woman was taken to a hospital and police are investigating the crash.

"We believe that another vehicle that was not an autonomous vehicle (AV) may have been initially involved in the collision, but the vehicle or driver were not present at the scene during our investigation," San Francisco officials told AFP.

Video presented to AFP by Cruise showed the self-driving car and another vehicle slightly ahead to its left moving through a intersection with a green light when the second car hit the woman.

"The initial impact was severe and launched the pedestrian directly in front of the AV," Cruise spokesperson Hannah Lindow told AFP, the description conforming to video captured by car cameras.

"The AV then braked aggressively to minimize the impact."

The Cruise AV stopped atop the woman, while the other car left the scene, video showed.

The severely injured woman was pinned beneath the AV when firefighters arrived, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.

Firefighters contacted the Cruise control center to make sure the vehicle was securely stopped then used heavy rescue tools to lift it and pull the woman out, department officials said in a release.

"Our heartfelt concern and focus is the wellbeing of the person who was injured and we are actively working with police to help identify the responsible driver," Lindlow said.

California authorities in August expanded driverless taxi services in San Francisco, giving the go ahead for operators Waymo and Cruise to compete with ride-share services and cabs.

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) voted to let Waymo, a unit of Google-parent Alphabet, and General Motors-owned Cruise essentially run 24-hour robotaxi services in San Francisco.

Driverless cars were first introduced in San Francisco in 2014 with a mandatory human "safety driver" on board.

Four years later, California scrapped its requirement for a human driver to be in the car.

The CPUC session drew commenters from all sides of the issue, with some calling robotaxis unsafe menaces while others lauded them as solutions to everything from climate change to road rage.

Since their introduction, driverless cars have been involved in several problematic instances, such as becoming stuck in the middle of active roads, blocking bus lanes or even interfering in police or firefighter operations. Source: AFP

Expect cheaper fuel as FG approves autogas plants

The Nigerian Midstream Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) had approved the construction of a gas plant to expand the product's availability in Nigeria.

The agency added that the gas projects are at the final stages of completion across the country, and some would be due in early 2024.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of NMDPRA, Farouk Ahmed, harnessing the 209 trillion cubic feet of available natural gas in Nigeria remains critical for energy transition and industrialisation.

Ahmed said the new approval would see an additional 500 metric tons of LPG storage depot open in the Gwgwalada area of Abuja.

He said this is the right time to leverage Nigeria's vast gas resources.

Per the agency's CEO, the country has more than 209 TCF of gas, and the government has designated the product as a transition to cleaner energy, especially after petrol subsidy removal.

The NMDPRA boss added.' Nigeria's gas utilisation per capita is below that of other African countries'.

He stated that the new gas plants would provide jobs for Nigerians as the agency would guide investors through the process and provide support to enable players to meet their objectives in the construction process.

The Managing Director of Noretek Energy Limited, Edward Traore, said the new plant is critical to the company's more extensive strategy.

The recent comment comes as petrol marketers say they are rolling out about 7,000 autogas stations with nearly 500,000 trucks running on gas.

The Nigerian government has stated its commitment to pivot away from petrol to gas following subsidy removal from petrol.

President Bola Tinubu has asked relevant agencies to begin rolling out cheap and alternative fuel to cushion the effect of subsidy removal.

The motorists and transport operators in Nigeria will witness relief soon after the Nigerian government ends the petrol subsidy, which caused a spike in the product's price across the country.

The national president of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Chinedu Okoronkwo, revealed that the association is 90% ready to roll out Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as an alternative fuel, which would sell between N100 to N110 per litre before the end of June.

He stated this during an interview on Channels Television and stressed that CNG would serve as an alternative to petrol.

The child's parents were thrilled about the delivery. The baby's mother, Sarju Devi, who is 25, expressed excitement about the newborn.

“My sister has given birth to a baby who has 26 fingers, and we are considering it to be the incarnation of Dholagarh Devi. We are very happy," Sarju's brother told local media, New York Post reports.

The baby's family's joy stems from their belief that the child is a reincarnation of a Hindu goddess - Dholagarh Devi.

Dholagarh Devi is a renowned deity, and her temple is near the baby's birthplace. Sculptures portray the goddess of Dholagarh as a youthful figure with multiple arms. The baby's father, Gopal Bhattacharya, is reportedly happy about the delivery.

However, medical professionals said the baby's condition is a genetic anomaly.

Tribunal affirms Tinubu’s election as president

The Presidential Election Petitions Court on Wednesday, September 6, affirmed the election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as Nigeria's 16th President

In the court's final judgement, Tinubu has been returned as the actual winner of the Saturday, February 25 presidential election victory.

On whether the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was right to return Tinubu as the duly elected by a majority of lawful votes cast in the 2023 presidential poll, the Tribunal held that the petitioner — the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar —, did not successfully prove the allegations against this ground and indeed all the grounds in their petition.

Nigeria’s main opposition parties failed to prove claims of electoral malpractice against the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) in February’s disputed elections, Aljazeera report also added in it's report

“This petition is hereby declared unmeritorious,” one of the judges said, as the tribunal rejected the opposition challenge to Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s win in the presidential election.

This is coming a few hours after the tribunal dismissed the petition filed by Peter Obi of the Labour Party against Tinubu's victory.

Justice Haruna Tsammani, leader of the five-man panel, added,

“This petition accordingly lacks merit. I affirm the return of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the duly elected President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The parties are to bear their cost.”

The Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) also rejected 15 out of the 27 witnesses presented by Atiku Abubakar of the PDP to prove his case against the election of President Bola Tinubu.

The court gave the decision in the judgement, which is still being delivered as of the time of filing this report

The tribunal later struck out a notable claim by Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Atiku had said President Bola Tinubu was unqualified to contest for president because the incumbent Nigerian leader forfeited $460,000 in 'a compromise agreement' for narcotics-related crime in the United States (US) District Court, Northern District of Illinois Eastern Division.

Tinubu's appointment: PSC retires 4 senior police officers

President Bola Tinubu-led federal government, through the Police Service Commission (PSC), has ordered the compulsory retirement of four Deputy Inspectors General (DIG) Police.

The commission disclosed that its decision was “under the Third Schedule, Part 1 M, para A&B of the 1999 Constitution, reinforced with Section 6 of the Commissions (Establishment) Act 2001, para a, c, d, e, &f.”

The DIGs ordered to step down are Moses Jitiboh, Adeleke Bode, Dan-Mallam Mohammed, and Hafiz Inuwa.Ikechukwu Ani, the spokesperson of the PSC, in a statement on Monday, August 28, said that the order came following the reluctance of the senior officers to step down after their junior, Kayode Egbetokun, was appointed as the Inspector General of Police.

Ani said the commission had expected them to apply for voluntary retirement or leave the force, but they failed to do that, and such action could lead to a status reversal.

The statement reads in part:

"The Commission, having waited for ample time with no such application from any of them, took the decision to compulsorily retire them to uphold discipline, which is the bedrock of the Force, and to discourage status reversal, which is inherently inimical to the exercise of authority by the Inspector General.”

Barely a month after his inauguration, President Tinubu appointed Egbetoku as the new IG, alongside other security heads in the military and customs.

UK to assist Nigeria on trade balance – Envoy

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery has pledged the UK government’s commitment toward creating a balance of trade with Nigeria.
Montgomery made the pledge in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja in the course of his visit to the Managing Director of the agency.
Trade balance is the difference between the value of exports and the value of imports of a country.
If exports exceed imports then the country has a trade surplus and the trade balance is said to be positive.
But if imports exceed exports, the country has a trade deficit and its trade balance is said to be negative
The British envoy, therefore, said that exploring oil alone would not create adequate jobs for Nigerians.
He said that exploring the abundant opportunities in agriculture through investment in the sector would improve quality and productivity as well as create job opportunities.
According to him, the exportation of agricultural produce will improve diversification and the livelihoods of Nigerians thus helping to achieve a positive trade balance.
“That is where we get a win-win. What is in your interest is in our own interest as well.
“The present economic challenge is difficult; it is a tough time already with a lot of inflation and unemployment in Nigeria.
“One upside of the recent change in the foreign exchange policy is the recent devaluation of the naira. Nigeria has now suddenly become very much competitive in the international market.”
He commended the decision by President Bola Tinubu’s administration to revive the nation’s economy to have provided Britain the opportunity to grow its trade, investment, and economic relations.
He said Britain would back Nigeria’s economic reforms to ensure success and build on its economic relations to boost the trade balance between the two countries.
“Years ago, the UK bought more oil from Nigeria and the trade balance might have been the other way.“But I think the UK buys less oil from Nigeria now. Nigeria’s oil is going to other countries.
“This brings me to the key question which is, what is the content of your export?
“We would like to help provide export opportunities for Nigerian businesses to the UK, partly as a component of your diversification strategy.
“Nigeria has done a fantastic job to diversify its economy, particularly in the South West of the country.
“I think there are lots of high-end and high-value potential in the creative industry, the artistic areas, and services.
“There is an opportunity for Nigeria in the future to develop goods and services that can be exported based on the digital economy with abundant agricultural land if committed to national standards on export.”
The Managing Director, News Agency of Nigeria, Buki Ponle (2nd left), British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery (middle), Editor-in-Chief, NAN, Silas Nwoha (left), Managing Editor, NAN, Ephraims Sheyin (2nd right), and Muftau Ojo, Special Assistant to the NAN MD, Special Duties (left) pose for a picture when the British envoy visited the managing director in Abuja.
Montgomery stated that the UK recently inaugurated a new policy known as the Developing Countries’ Trading Scheme, which has been of immense benefit to Nigeria as it removed tariffs on lots of products from Nigeria.
“It is not huge, but significant and it is one of the most generous trade agreements from a wealthier G7-type country and Nigeria is one of the key potential beneficiaries. So that is the first step.
“There are other things we need to do because it is not just about tariffs, it is about exporters knowing how to export; who they can partner with in the UK, and whether they can meet the standards.
“We have put in place the Great Gate, an online one-stop-shop to give advice and we are hoping to help potential Nigerian exporters understand regulatory and quality issues that will enable them to export to the UK.u

“We will take the next step and enhance trade and investment.

“We have some work going on between the British Standard Institute and the Standard  Organisation of Nigeria, we want to make sure both sides understand each other’s regulations.
“This will also help exporters get the certification they need to export to the UK and also import from the UK.
“There is huge potential in the agricultural sector, particularly products such as cocoa, sesame and cashew.
“These types of products have huge demand in the UK, but lots of them come from Ghana and not from Nigeria.
“It is clear that Nigeria can do it. All we need to do is to smoothen the other to enable that export.
“We have an economic dialogue but we would like to convert that into an enhanced trade and investment partnership, and that will provide a basis to take forward this issue of greater trade.
“We can do more trade both ways and grow trade volume, but we also want a different quality of diversified trade and if we can hone Nigeria’s export potential, it would create more jobs and livelihoods.” (NAN)
