Southeast governors tasks FG on Enugu airport

Forum of the southeast state governors has pleaded with the federal government to save the Akanu Ibiam International Airport located in Enugu from its present deplorable condition.
The governors led by the chairman of the forum, Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state, jointly made this plea in a communique released after a meeting held on Sunday, September 2 at Enugu government house.
Reading the communique, the chairman said the runaway, the runaway lights and the tarmac at the airport were in bad shape, making the airport lose its endearing presence in the state.
He said: “The Forum appreciated the federal government for the intervention on the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, but however drew its attention to the deplorable state of the runway, the runway lights and the tarmac and called on the minister of state for aviation to visit the airport for an on the spot assessment and urgent intervention."
Governor Dave also added: “The runway light which was recently installed cannot show any light – that is not acceptable, we request an urgent intervention. The Forum also requested that urgent steps should be taken for the reactivation of the cargo section of the airport.”
Our source gathers that among the issues discussed by the forum is how to make the region a medical tourist destination in Nigeria by setting up world-class health facilities in each state of the region.
Earlier the pensioners under the payroll of Enugu state government, on Wednesday paid a solidarity visit to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi at the government house, Enugu, in appreciation of his commitment to their welfare, in spite of the nation’s economic challenges.
The jubilant retirees, who described Gov. Ugwuanyi as one of the foremost pensioner-friendly governors Enugu state has ever produced, reassured him of their absolute loyalty and support.
